After dominating possession and impressive counter-press, Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea played a 0-0 draw with Wolves. The result might leave Chelsea a bit frustrated, but Wolves side will surely take the one point happily. Moreover, it was the first PL clean sheet for Nuno Santo’s side since October 30.
After knowing the current Chelsea squad only for 24 hours, Tuchel went with an experience-rich team. Moreover, the formation on papers and on-field was really different as the flamboyant winger Callum Hudson-Odoi played on the right-wing back position.
Despite lacking a cutting edge, the London side had pretty good chances with Olivier Giroud and Kai Havertz in the first half. On the other hand, Wolves’ Pedro Neto and Dendoncker had their chances as well. After sharing one point, Chelsea has now climbed to the 8th place in the PL table.
The new Chelsea manager vowed to display some attacking football at Stamford Bridge. This dream almost became a reality when Hudson-Odoi delivered a teasing cross inside the first five minutes. However, the French striker Olivier Giroud missed the opportunity by a few inches.
Chelsea’s goalkeeper Edouard Mendy almost gifted a goal to Wolves in the second half, but Neto’s effort went over the crossbar. From there, Chelsea showed more urgency with Christian Pulisic, Tammy Abraham and Mason Mount. As a result, the increased quality in the attack almost gave Chelsea the opener, but Kovacic’s shot was marginally wide.
When the match moved into its dying minutes, Chelsea came very close once again to scoring. But Willian Jose deflected away Havertz’s header in 93rd minute of the match.
How the managers reacted?
Chelsea’s new boss Thomas Tuchel added that he spoke in the team’s dressing room and told everybody that there’s no room for disappointment. He also showed his satisfaction with the team’s energy and structure throughout the match. Tuchel commented, “We were well-organised and played with courage.” Chelsea manager ended the interview by adding that if this is our starting point, then I’m looking forward to where we will end up.
Wolves’ coach Nuno Santo praised his team’s focus and discipline. He added that we couldn’t get distracted by what was happening with Chelsea. Moreover, the Portuguese coach mentioned the importance of a clean sheet. He said that getting a clean sheet is always positive, and it was something that we need. He ended his post-match conference by saying that his boys did well, which was the starting point for everything.
