With April around the corner, many of us will be thinking about cracking on with a spring clean. And without a doubt, the best place to start is in the bedroom.
You spend more time in your bedroom than any other room and its functions are simple – sleep and relaxation. It should be the last place you allow to get messy.
Tidy house, tidy mind – right? There’s actually more evidence behind this than you may first think. There’s no excuse now – follow our tips to help ease those stresses.
The Science Behind a Clean Bedroom
There have actually been a number of studies that have looked into the psychological link between a tidy house and our mental health.
Research has found a link between cluttered, untidy houses and showing higher levels of the stress hormone, cortisol.
Additionally, a number of studies across the UK, USA and Canada found links between the cleanliness of your working environment and academic performance. Cluttered spaces proved distracting and reduced productivity, further proving our brains like order.
Even our bedsheet etiquette affects our wellbeing. The National Sleep Foundation found that those who make their bed in the morning are 19% more likely to get a good night’s sleep. And three-quarters of people reported sweeter slumber after their sheets had been freshly cleaned.
Tips and Tricks to Tidy Up Your Bedroom
So, how can we best help ourselves out and keep our bedroom in order?
- Little and Often
The biggest secret to keeping a tidy bedroom is to never let it get too messy – as such a big cleaning job is likely to put us off ever doing it. Allocate just 5 or 10 minutes a day (or less if you’re tight for time!) for a quick declutter and it won’t get out of hand.
- Upgrade Your Storage
Storage, storage, storage. The key to any well-organised room. Life will be so much easier if you’re smart with it. One such way to do this, especially if you’re short on space, is by installing over-bed wardrobes to increase your floor space. With multiple compartments and configurations, they could be just what you need. Shelves, baskets, trays and trunks will also help bring the zen.
- De-Clutter Your Wardrobes
Is your wardrobe full of clothes that have barely left the coat hanger? As a general rule, if you’ve not worn it in a year, get rid. You might be surprised at how much space you can free up for other things. Look into donating your items to charity or you could even make a penny or two by selling them online.
- Buy a Bin
This one might seem obvious, but buying a waste bin for your bedroom will avoid old bottles, packaging, wrappers, you name it, stacking up because you haven’t had a chance to take them downstairs. Dispose of them straight away in your very own bedroom bin – and it doesn’t have to be ugly.
