It has been over a year since the United States identified and confirmed its first COVID-19 case severely impacting events, timelines and the entire value chain in the Hollywood entertainment industry.
As the Hollywood Reporter reported in 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many folks to be forced out of work including photographers, production crews, boutique agenciesand thousands of actors who come to Los Angeles to fulfill their dreams.
With the rigorous health and safety rules being introduced, television and film sets have been forced to immediately shutdown or relocate as the virus aggressively continues to spread. According to Worldometers, Los Angeles county has now been identified as the 6th hotspot COVID-19 zone in the United States.
With an LA county population of 10 million battling COVID, unemployment increasing, and folks working remotely, we wanted to get an inside take and met with Los Angeles based Actor, Dave Vij. David shares his perspective and insights on COVID and how it has impacted him and the industry.
STAFF: Have you seen a slow down? If so then what is the auditioning process like these days for you?
David: Definite slow-down in the industry. However, there are auditions and the process is mainly technology driven. For example, I now do all my auditions leveraging video conferencing. Casting offices continue to keep a pulse on talent as production is limited with pilots and current shows navigating through the COVID-19 safety requirements. I do think technology has helped and will continue to be a part of castingpost COVID saving time and cost for all parties.
STAFF: Where do you see the television/film industry going?
David: COVID-19 has aggressively transitioned the industry to digital platforms. More and more people are streaming, using various devices to watch content. In addition, more choices are given to the consumer and the industry is starting to cater and curate to these diverse audiences. Content is in high demand for both digital platforms and networks. This will continue and Big Tech may start to play even a bigger role in the years to come.
STAFF: With respect to acting work, how was 2020 for you? And is there any light in 2021?
David: In 2020 there was limited work. It was a very humbling year for me, testing for networks, TV/Film projects halted and pushed to late this year with hopes of a vaccine roll out. With respect to 2021 there is light. It’s all about being mindful of adopting and practicing safety on and off sets. Key thing is to prepare and be ready!
