At a time when Harry and Meghan’s “Megxit” from the royal family continues to make headline news, we talk to Gry Finsnes whose new novel provides a new take on what life is like “behind the scenes” at Buckingham Palace.
Following the success of her previous Best Seller novels, we caught up with the author to ask her a number of questions about her latest new novel.
Every book has a story about its creation, what’s the story behind the Into The Closets?
When working in Buckingham Palace I saw unusual things happening. This inspired me to write a fictional novel with some of the real elements woven into the plot.
A good story is all about the setting, the descriptiveness, and the raw energy that captivates, all coming together to have the reader turning the pages effortlessly. Your book includes all of them, what is one of the keys that you find is critical when getting into the writing zone.
The most difficult part is to actually get to the table, sit down and open the computer. Writing is hard work and I always try to find excuses, telling myself I do not need to start quite yet. But once I am there and read the last page I wrote, it is easier. Immediately I find something that has to be corrected or redone, and I am off into the world I have just created.
Are there any new surprises that we can look out for when reading your latest novel?
There are quite a few surprises, I think. I have described a number of people with unusual sexual tastes and inherited problems, as well as a political constellation from that period of time which leads up to the theft of a priceless painting. It could all have happened in real life, but it is of course just fiction.
How long did it take for you to write your book and what was the main challenge you faced while writing it?
The book took around two years to write and rewrite and polish. The challenge was naturally not to embarrass my former employer, the Queen.
