I am always amazed by those who chase their dreams and are completely taken up in it. It’s even more fascinating when they then manage to turn their passion into a career. Gorgeous Marta Romashina, known on social media as @wheremartawent, is one of those people. Born in Russia, she grew up in Prague, city with a stunning architecture that always inspired her. After finishing a Bachelor’s degree in Fashion Marketing in Raffles Design Institute in Shanghai she moved to Italy to get her Master’s in Fashion Buying from a famous school Polimoda. It was at these creative hubs that she collected a great set of styling and an eye for aesthetics. Today she works as a freelance photographer, stylist and art director on freelance projects.
1. What inspired you to become an Instagram influencer?
I don’t like to call myself an influencer but a content creator. In 2017 when I lived in Singapore, I took a trip to Europe to spend Christmas and New Years with my friends. I’ve visited Paris, Milan and Prague and was taking photos at all the places I visited – cute cafes, architecture, art galleries. I started posting it on IG and started to get positive feedback from new followers. Later in January when I was back in Asia I met my boyfriend who happened to be a photographer, so that all kind of clicked.
2. How did you learn content creation? Study or self-taught?
Both. I studied styling and photography in Italy and Shanghai. But I’m still learning a lot these days from YouTube.
3. What camera can we find in your backpack?
Canon EOS 200, Vintage Zorkii 4
4. Where do you look for inspiration?
Books, old movies, architecture and art – things that never stop to inspire me.
5. Photographers you admire?
Michal Pudelka, Brydie Mack, Jason Lee Parry, Zhenya and Tanya Posternak, Nick Knight
6. Favourite place you have travelled to?
Every trip I took had something special in it, so these kind of questions are always the hardest for me. If I’d to pick top 5, it will be Tokyo, NYC, Sydney, Shanghai and Champagne.
7. You keep on changing your home base very often. Where do you see yourself settling down if you will?
I still have a dream to live in Paris and NYC for couple of years. But eventually I might settle in Amsterdam or Copenhagen.
8. You talk about food on your Instagram and blog quite often. What will be your favourite?
I’m a big foodie indeed and probably if I’d pick, it will be Japanese. I like to eat almost everything from there and can have it every day. Having lived in Bangkok for few years, I still crave for Thai food very often.
9. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
Still travelling but less. Finally getting a home in Paris. Shooting fashion editorials in the dreamiest locations.
10. Do you prefer digital or film?
I’ve been using my digital camera most of the time. However, I’ve just started shooting with analogue camera and really love the effect it gives to the image. Though, it might be complicated during my future travels or commercial shoots. But we never now!
11. #1 destination on your list to go to!
I wish to explore more of Scandinavia – Faroe islands and Norwegian Fjords in the summer; stay in Finnish igloo watching the Northern Lights in the winter.
12. What advice you’d give to an aspiring content creator ?
I think with anything you are just starting, it’s important to understand why are you doing this. From there you will learn how truly express yourself, develop your personal style, which will make you stand out from the rest.
