After reporting 50,000 deaths on 11 November 2020, the UK has now reported 100,000 deaths from COVID-19. Moreover, it has taken only 20 days to double the figure of total deaths in the country.
As a result, while speaking Downing Street news briefing, PM Boris Johnson said that it’s tough to compute the sorrow in such kind of statistics. Moreover, he also added that it’s a tragic loss of life.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson took the full responsibility of the UK government’s actions during the pandemic. He added that I’m deeply sorry for every life that has been lost. He also offered his condolences to everyone who lost a loved one in this pandemic.
Chief Medical Officer Professor Chris Whitty also added that it’s a sad day for the UK. But, he quickly warned by saying that unfortunately, we will record some more deaths in the upcoming weeks. However, the country will surely feel the effects of vaccines as well.
Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer also described the situation as a ‘national tragedy.’ Moreover, he added that we shouldn’t become numb to these data. Every death is a loved one and an empty chair at the dinner table.
UK’s current situation and COVID-19 update
On Tuesday, UK has reported 20,089 people resulting positive for the coronavirus test. This is also the lowest daily rise in cases so far in 2021.
The decreasing number of cases are suggesting that current lockdowns in London and South East are working. However, many experts have urged the government not to ease the restrictions any soon. Thus, the uncertainty is going to continue over how long the lockdown will last.
