The United States might be the place where dreams come true, but it can be extremely challenging for immigrant families. Zain and Farhaz Kheraj know about these challenges first hand. The brothers grew up in Atlanta, Georgia, where they were raised by parents who made sacrifices for them and expected them to follow a certain path.
The road was simple: work hard in school, get a good university education, land a high-paying job, and stay there. Zain and Farhaz did just that, at first. Zain worked as a consultant at a multinational conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway, and Farhaz worked at a professional services network, Deloitte Consulting. Taking home a salary of nearly $80,000, the brothers were living the life their parents had envisioned, and their family was extremely proud.
When one raises hard-working, driven children, it also instills a sense of independence and critical thinking in them. It’s these qualities that drove the brothers to do something that initially disappointed their parents: they decided to quit their successful consulting careers and start their own business. After sacrificing so much time, money, and energy into their education and their careers, the brothers’ parents were initially skeptical about the decision.
Before Zain and Farhaz left their jobs, they started TrustMySystem. Born out of their love for sports, mathematics, and algorithms, the brothers created a sports consulting, analytics, and betting advice site. Using their knowledge as consultants in the finance industry and their experience with sports, the brothers sought to ensure that their business put transparency and quality customer service at the top of their company goals.
TrustMySystem looks at various American and international sports throughout the season and crunches the numbers to determine where wins and scores might go. The company doesn’t make broad, sweeping promises. Instead, it presents the data to clients and works with them to make decisions. Their results are posted on Instagram every day, closing that all-important transparency loop.
In a time when the pandemic has hit our pockets and our goals hard, it’s refreshing to see people who are thriving despite going against the grain. Risks don’t always work out, but Farhaz and Zain have shown that you’ll never know until you try.
