Olumide Gbenro is a digital nomad community leader based in Bali, Indonesia where he runs his online businesses. He’s doing one push up for every dollar raised through the Koji platform with 100% of proceeds donated to a charity named Feed Bali.
After deciding to stay in Bali during the Covid-19 outbreak he says he’s seen first hand how a lack of tourism has decimated local families whose sole source of income was tourism related.
“When all the tourists left, everything shut down. Some of my friends here are local Balinese business owners and I noticed how tough it was for them. I could see the struggle they were having to stay open every single day. The street vendors went home and I saw less people creating an income for their families”
Olumide decided to take action and in June to create a virtual summit that would donate proceeds to the charity, Save Bali in collaboration with Trensa Bali Cooking School. He partnered with Mikey Moran, the CoFounder of Indonesian company GoJek to collect hundreds of dollars during the event.
But Olumide wasn’t satisfied. He says for months during the lockdown, he would sit in his room and ponder on what more could be done on a regular basis and found a platform called Koji that allows creatives and influencers to raise money for their favorite charities.
He says the idea to do 1 push up for $1 came to him after hours of contemplation.
“I was just sitting in my room and kept thinking, what can I do right now. And it hit me, pushups for Bali!”
His goal is $1,999 which is 1999 pushups and he’s off to a great start. He’s already raised hundreds of dollars from the initiative and continues to do pushups in his room every day as donations come in.
