2020 was one of the most challenging years for businesses all around the world. On top of the usual challenges of day-to-day operations, entrepreneurs had to combat mobility restrictions and a decrease in demand for their products during the global health crisis. Everyone was either scared to go out, or they were saving money to buy only the essentials.
But for Janet Frederick and Deannee Santiago of skincare company Lulu’s Holistics, the pandemic gave them an excellent opportunity to grow and help other people out during a time of great need.
The Value of Being a Beauty Brand
As stated earlier, people only wanted to patronize brands that could sell essential goods, including food, water, and gas. Typical beauty products were out of the question, since most people stayed at home most of the time anyway. Many cosmetics and beauty stores were forced to close, especially in the first quarter of 2020, with many people being laid off.
But of course, as a smart entrepreneur, some businesspeople were able to use the ongoing pandemic to pivot their businesses to cater to the changing needs of their market. For Lulu’s Holistics, this was focused on antibacterial and antiviral products like tea tree soap made out of natural ingredients. This shift caused their sales to skyrocket last year, while others were being forced to downsize operations.
Giving Back During Trying Times
Furthermore, the mother-and-daughter skincare company wasn’t just trying to get more customers and sales during this time. Even if they noticed that many beauty brands were taking advantage of the situation and selling masks and hand sanitizer at an exorbitant price, they kept doing what they do best. At the same time, they did not forget about giving back to the community during those trying times. Instead of selling masks for profit, they decided to give them away for free to their loyal customers. The same goes for hand sanitizer.
But that’s not all. They also distributed free benefit shots to people to give them a health boost amid the threat of catching COVID-19. They made sure to take the time to help others, and they felt blessed in return.
Moving forward, Lulu’s Holistics wants to continue helping other local communities by planning to establish more physical stores not just in Florida and Queens and the Bronx in New York, but other areas and countries where they have strong customer bases. These include Canada, the United Kingdom, and Jamaica. By doing so, the company can create more job opportunities for other people to succeed together with the beauty brand.
The way Lulu’s Holistics conducts business is a remarkable example of a mutually beneficial relationship between an enterprise and the community. It shows that by getting rid of greed and showing genuine respect and care for others, small businesses can take flight and become a reputable empire in a short amount of time.
