Jamil Abiad a Canadian global basketball trainer on the rise is doing everything he can to help grow the game of basketball and help young athletes to become the best they can be. What makes Jamil so effective as a basketball trainer is the fact that he is not only experienced with professional basketball, but he is also experienced with overcoming adversity.
Adversity is something that every athlete must go through to some degree. When you’re in any kind of competitive setting, there will be those who doubt you and compare you to others, and you absolutely need to be able to overcome that adversity before it overcomes you.
This is something the Jamil Abiad is very experienced with – he has faced struggles all through his basketball career.
First of all, Jamil grew up in a single parent home with 3 younger brothers. This meant that his mother did not have the time or resources to keep him in high-level competitive sports.
From the start, Jamil needed to struggle to gain exposure and be noticed by basketball coaches. However, he never gave up, and throughout grade 10-12 he taught himself how to use cameras and video editing technology to promote himself via highlight films that he could send to coaches.
This experience is what prompted Jamil to become an entrepreneur with his first business Next Level Media. Through his struggle, Jamil learned a skillset that enables him to help other athletes promote themselves to coaches and advance their basketball career.
The biggest challenge that Jamil faced throughout his basketball career was something that nobody could control – his height. Being of average height, Jamil was always struggling to earn the same attention as taller players who were considered inherently better than him.
It would have been easy for Jamil to give up when faced with this adversity, but instead he used it as fuel to motivate him to work even harder. What Jamil lacked in height he made up for with his passion and dedication to the sport, becoming an effective player despite the fact he was often the smallest guy on the court.
All the lessons Jamil has learnt from his struggles has translated into the work he does now as a basketball trainer. Every student he works with, regardless of their age, benefits from Jamil’s focus on the mental and physical aspects of training.
Instead of being trained by someone who has had it easy, Jamil’s students get instruction from someone who knows how much hard work is needed to overcome adversity. In this way, the benefits of Jamil’s training extend beyond just basketball or sport in general – the lessons he teaches (self-discipline, time management, how to overcome adversity etc.) can be applied to any pursuit in life.
Overall, there is no doubt that the struggle Jamil has had to face throughout his basketball career has ultimately made him a better trainer and mentor for the aspiring athletes he works with.
