In an era when it seems we’re celebrating feminism more than ever, and sharing stories in solidarity of abuse, why are people still tearing women down over their choices in life? Both in person and online, false shaming is way too common an occurrence — and oftentimes, the perpetrator is a fellow female! Sadly, false shaming runs deeper than just the people we know personally. Some women had anecdotes about troubling incidents with professionals and authority figures — the very people you’d expect to be on your side and help.
Suelyn Medeiros, a well-known supermodel known for films such as Video Girl, Dysfunctional Friends and Still a Teen Movie, has amassed a whopping 2.6million followers on Instagram, where she displays her life and dammn attractive selfies. Her Instagram profile is filled with photos of her enviable curves in flashy bikinis at exotic locations around the world, from deserts to beaches.
For years, Suelyn has faced different forms of body shaming. She has faced stereotypes for her beautiful curves, which have proved to be a both boon and a bane for her. Body shaming is destroying females of all ages; it’s forcing them into thinking that they need to look a certain way to be beautiful. Suelyn has naturally fuller lips and curves which have got her huge attention and criticism at the same time. She has never been under the knife for her face or butt.
Medeiros has also been subject to false accusations and rumours lately. She was blamed for some illicit drastic events and acts of unkindness. Such false accusations have proven to be an assault on her sense of self, and an adverse reaction is the least that’s expected. Except that in times like now—with social media as one of humanity’s most irresponsible weapons—adverse reaction itself can take on the nature of an insidious attack.
The question here isn’t necessarily about public shaming (of both parties) and its justification. Mob justice, virtual or otherwise, is rarely, if ever, reformative. Suelyn comes from a very humble background and is a mother to a beautiful child. She was raised by immigrant parents in New York, where she helped her mother in a missionary charity work known as OSU children’s Home. Her down to earth attitude was also reflected in her helpful contributions during the Covid 19 pandemic. She owns a major in psychology and is a CPR AED First aid nurse with a BLS certification. Her aim is to help others in the best way possible with all her abilities and bring a positive and productive difference in the world. All acts of public shaming she has been through are traumatic and do not hold any mass of truth within.
The bottom line lies in the fact that false shaming is harmful and damaging to the person on the receiving end. It can be internalized and kept inside for years — maybe a lifetime — no matter what type of person the perpetrator is and whether it’s online or in person. So stop and ask yourself why you’re doing it. What’s your motive? Think about the lifelong impact it could have on the person you’re accusing.
Let’s all make a conscious effort to adjust the crowns of women around us and help them shine in life.
