The music industry, just like travel and hospitality has taken a big hit during the last three quarters of 2020. Most artists, like the rest of us came into 2020 with lots of plans and positive attitude. But the Covid-19 pandemic and more importantly the travel and business restrictions have had shocking results. From club shows to concert events and major tours with companies like Live Nation things are definitely not looking the same for 2021.
Touring and performing live was a major part of artists income pre pandemic and many DJs and performers have struggled to adjust to the situation. Hopefully some outdoor festivals like Rolling Loud can continue sooner with safety and social distancing but indoor arena concerts may not be happening anytime soon.
Popular concert and event online ticket platform Ticketmaster has suggested they will implement some safety measures in the future. Some artists have started using platforms like Twitch and Instagram Live as the digital world is the only way they can connect with their fans. Ticketmaster President Mark Yovich said in a statement. “Whether that is getting a vaccine, taking a test, or other methods of review and approval – which could then be linked via a digital ticket so everyone entering the event is verified.”
Some artists like Trae Gold a member of Soul Gala in Toronto, Canada have adjusted by releasing vlogs and a steady stream of music videos on their own YouTube channel. Trae Gold just released his most recent EP “Still Down Bad” and Soul Gala channel has over 250,000 views on YouTube. Soul Gala is producing and mixing and filming most of their projects in house and that has allowed them to keep things moving.
Like most artist DJs have also struggled to adjust to the situation in 2020. The Toronto Raptors 905 DJ has switched to executive production and recently dropped a big project. With a 2020 spin on the Shaggy classic “It Wasn’t Me”, Executive Producer DJ Andre 905 released “Wasn’t Me” accompanied by a music video premiering on Complex Canada.
The music industry has been turned upside down this year with the closure of shows and restrictions on travel and filming. Artists and DJs alike will have to continue to make the right moves to stay relevant and get traction during the next year. Platforms like Only Fans and Twitch are being looked at as options to monetize your fan base while providing a unique visual experience. The music industry is continuing to transition and fans are continuing to consume music on digital platforms.
