People are now talking about mental health more than ever. The most common things that you may have heard people say are: “You need to come out of your shell,” “You should call your friends and speak about what’s bothering you,” and “You should see a therapist.”
Do you see what’s expected in all these statements? It points to only one thing: talk to people when you are down. But what if you don’t have a patient pair of ears to listen to you without being judgmental? That’s when you talk to a therapist.
Nili Askari, an empathetic and skilled therapist who specials in Marriage and Family Therapy, says, “We will only seek help if we want to help ourselves. If you want to live a fulfilled life, you should tell your story, unedited, without any fear of anyone judging you. And that’s where I come in. I can become that pair of ears that you need to listen to your story patiently.” According to Nili, depression and anxiety are parts of everyone’s lives now, and you can get out of it only by talking to someone willing to hear your story.
Tackling clients efficiently
While it is easy to say that being a therapist is more about listening, the job is very challenging and emotionally charging. Nili believes that while she does everything to help her clients, it’s not her job to save everyone. Instead, she must become the guiding light for her clients so that they can see the power they are holding inside themselves.
Sometimes, the stories of her clients are so overwhelming that they impact her life. They make her feel different than what she would usually feel when she hears stories of other clients. Nili, after encountering multiple situations like these, learned to set a boundary between her and her clients. As empathetic as she is, she doesn’t want to carry these experiences with her because they would eventually burn her out, and she may not be able to help her clients constructively anymore.
It took her years to set up this boundary. She sought help from her mentors, colleagues, and her support system to ensure that she doesn’t bring her office’s emotions to her home. This helps her process her emotions to fulfill the needs of her clients efficiently.
Coping with mental health during Covid-19
Covid-19 prevented Nili from going to her office. That meant her clients were deprived of face-to-face sessions during the lockdown. But with telehealth therapy, she came back to help her clients because she knew that she played a pivotal role in their lives.
Although telehealth therapy was also a challenge initially, Nili wasn’t afraid to face it. She was confident in her abilities and knew that she would make connections with her clients, even telephone and video calls. After a few trial and error runs, everything came back to normal for Nili and her clients. They don’t feel uncomfortable talking over the phone because of the way Nili conducts her sessions.
Nili always puts her clients first before her. It’s this innate quality that makes her one of the best therapists. Once you talk to her, you will feel that she knows all about you within a few sessions, thus gaining the trust to hear your story no matter how sad or low you may feel.
