Steph Gorton: When you know it is the right time to move on from your Corporate Job

Stephanie Gorton is a Certified Business & Mindset Coach and Owner of a successful business which earned 6 figures within its first year of operation. She works with ambitious women who are ready to take their business ideas to the next level and has helped over 3,000 clients and led 200+ seminars and events.

Steph is one of the fastest rising stars in the business coaching world; her trajectory has been incredible since the inception of her brand in 2017. She aims to give individual’s a purpose and fulfilment in their working life. Part of her mantra states, “you’re ready to do something every day that excites you and gives you a reason to jump out of bed. You’re done with playing small & you’re finally ready to take that leap of faith and trust your gut.”

This is supported by the wider press. For example, The Guardian affirms that the global pandemic has revolutionised the way we work. With many stuck working from home; reflection and self-development has never been more important. Entrepreneur magazine, Medium, confirms that corporate jobs can stifle individual’s personality and confidence in the exterior world. Often, people can grow into themselves due to the lack of creativity and repetitive nature of corporate work.

It is at that point which the world of work can start to take over all elements of someone’s life. For example, people interviewed commented they had difficulty to “switch off”, dealing with social situations and responding to their inner voice.

What makes Steph a great Business coach and mentor is that she has great experience in the corporate world. This helps her empathise and understand the situation which her clients are in. She crafted successful careers working in Management for Big Corporates like ALDI & Michael Page, and her proprietary Events business. A lot of her clients have demanding corporate jobs; yet want to scale their side-business to provide them with a living.

Here are some of Steph’s key tips when deciding whether to leave the rat-race:

  • Do not focus solely on the money- Steph points back to her Managerial career within Aldi. “I was earning very good money (…) everything should have felt right, but it didn’t”. Steph encourages those who are thinking of running a business to analyse the 6 Sections of Life: friends and family, money, career, growth and learning, Health and Fun. Individuals should weigh up how their new venture might impact or better each element & stop thinking about the safety net of a corporate wage.
  • Work with a Professional Business Coach – for those who want to scale their business, getting advice and support from a coach like Steph is invaluable. Steph’s client, Narelle Weir affirms, “Steph made me focus on what was income producing and what was really going to benefit and grow the business.” Her 6-month programme encompasses all the key skills and areas for scaling your start up to 6-figures and beyond.
  • Stop craving perfection and just run with your idea– Leapfrogging doubt is a popular concept in the entrepreneur world; it involves trusting your instinct, taking action and not being afraid to succeed. Steph advocates the mantra of “Just do it.” – She encourages her clients to take an idea, test it and deliver it, rather than sitting on the idea and never taking action.
