Zeina Al Zein works as a life coach both independently, counseling clients from around the MENA region, and at Medistic Center, where she regularly conducts in person sessions. Her approach focuses foremost on her clients’ individual self fulfillment in order to empower them to achieve their goals. Her eight tips for healthy living lay out practical strategies that can be employed everyday to enable individuals to better face life’s many challenges.
1. Put your relationship with yourself first.
Zeina believes her clients should look inward to assess how they understand themselves before they can enjoy fruitful relationships with the people in their lives. Put simply, awareness of self and healthy self image enable individuals to see their external relationships clearly. A critical component to her approach, Zeina emphasizes centering self awareness as a means of gaining valuable insight into the minds of others, whether they be family, friends, or partners.
2. Identify your values and ground yourself in them.
Core values, when properly identified, enable individuals to set clearly defined boundaries. Zeina instructs her clients to learn when to say “no”. Although discovering when, to whom, and why one should say “no” inevitably differs according to one’s own positionality and experiences, the practice alone often redefines relationships and empowers individuals to make informed decisions in line with their fundamental values.
3. Understand the universal laws that shape reality.
Zeina teaches clients about cosmic laws regarding faith, balance, and attraction. These philosophical principles, when understood and incorporated into one’s general disposition, help to orient the mind as it absorbs inevitable change. Learning how one interacts personally with these fundamental truths establishes a vital foundation for navigating obstacles in life.
4. Pay attention to your dreams.
All humans dream. Monitoring both the content and emotional overtones that occur during sleep allows Zeina’s clients to access thoughts they subconsciously suppress during the day. An essential component to many religious and spiritual traditions, reflecting on dreams presents a unique opportunity to consider areas of consciousness that often go unexplored. According to Zeina, the path to meaningful emotional recovery passes through the subconscious imagination.
5. Face difficult relationships head on.
Fear of intimacy often stems from negative past experiences. This fear, however, can inhibit the ability to form new relationships as well as to mend old ones. It is through relationships with others, whether they be romantic in nature, as in those between partners, or educational, involving parents and children, that Zeina believes individuals grow and mature. She describes the concept of a “karmic relationship”, which entails emotional turbulence, volatility, and pain. At the same time, however, these connections presuppose intense attraction or attachment. Pain allows for growth. By facing these particularly challenging relationships head on, Zeina’s clients make use of different forms of intimacy to find direction and clarity.
6. Meditate.
Zeina recommends implementing a daily meditation routine for her clients to gain valuable insight into how they interact with the world around them. Meditation requires pausing, observing, and reflecting. The perspective that arises from practicing various forms of meditation presents an invaluable opportunity for growth.
7. Practice breathing.
Despite always breathing, many never consider their own breath. A valuable tool in meditation and spiritual practice, breathing exercises can nurture a state of mindfulness. By stepping outside of their own thoughts and taking time to focus on the breath, Zeina’s clients attain the clarity needed to direct their energy productively. Different schools teach different exercises and individuals should feel free to explore the methods that best suit their personal interests and goals.
8. Eat clean.
Diet functions as the foundation of health. Proper eating positively and directly affects one’s sleep, strength, immune system, and perhaps most importantly, mind. Put simply, eat better to feel better.
