There are some industries with few to no rules. One of these is art, and this phenomenon has held true for millennia. In modern times, there are virtually no rules or even guidelines. London-born Sonny Henty, better known as Mr. NiCE, lives by this mantra.
Established merely five years ago, ARTBYMRNICE has a gallery at one of the most iconic addresses in the world: Wilshire Boulevard in Beverly Hills. His work drew attention quickly with its focus on pop art accented with bold colors and even bolder messages. These pieces are often eclectic, such as combining an image of the iconic Jessica Rabbit with couture brand logos (how fitting) or LeBron James with Bart Simpson depicted as a fellow basketball player. Several of his pieces incorporate neon signs with text that summarizes the companion image.
Needless to say, Mr. NiCE does not deliver art in the traditional sense, but there is no doubt it is still art. One constant about artistic expression is there are no guidelines as to what does and does not constitute art. It is deeply personal and based on self-expression plus individual creativity. Mr. NiCE embraces this creed with thought-provoking work that runs the entire gambit of human emotions.
Some art captures moments in time, while other pieces generate a strong sense of nostalgia. How is not important, only the result is. This falls under the “no rules” philosophy, and Mr. NiCE achieves both of these goals in his work. Whether it is a stunning homage to 1990s culture or an inspirational piece featuring the universally loved Winnie the Pooh, his work makes a powerful statement in its own language.
The only guidelines Mr. NiCE follows are his own. As this has bolstered the popularity and acclaim of his striking work, it is safe to say he will likely continue to do so.
