Golam Rabbani, you are known as Nayyan Bangalee, a young and dynamic political leader in Bangladesh. Can you tell us a bit about your journey in politics and social work?
My interest in politics began at a young age when I became involved in student politics. I later created the first-ever National Youth Forum of the country, and after the fall of Gen. Ershad in 1990, my political career began to take shape. One of my proudest achievements was the creation of the first-ever Free Laborer Federation of Bangladesh, which aimed to protect the rights of workers in the garment industry.
My passion for social justice and equality ideals has fueled my interest in working towards a better future for all, particularly for marginalized groups. As a result of my efforts, I have earned the nickname Nayanmoni of the Bangalees, meaning “Apple of the eyes”.
Bangladesh has faced political instability and unrest; how have you navigated these challenges?
Yes, the recent political chaos has been a significant challenge for our country. As a democratic state, we must ensure that we work towards building bridges and finding common ground to move the country forward. I have always been a proponent of inclusive politics, and I have been working towards creating a space for dialogue and negotiation between different parties and factions
Bangladesh also faces social and economic inequalities and injustices. How have you worked towards addressing these issues?
As a developing country, Bangladesh has made significant progress in recent years, but we still have a long way to go in addressing social and economic inequalities and injustices. I have been at the forefront of efforts to address these issues, working towards creating more opportunities for marginalized and disadvantaged communities in the country. It is essential to empower these communities and provide them with access to education, healthcare, and other basic amenities.
I believe that in order to eradicate corruption, we need more social workers to enter politics. Social workers are dedicated to working towards the betterment of society, and their inclusion in politics can bring about positive change. By bringing a different perspective and approach to governance, social workers can help address the challenges that we face as a society.
Despite facing challenges, you have earned respect and admiration of your peers and colleagues. What do you see as your future in politics?
My focus has always been on working towards social justice and equality, and I will continue to do so. There is still much work to be done in Bangladesh, and I will continue to work towards creating a better future for all. I hope that I can inspire more young people to become involved in politics and work towards bringing about positive change in their communities.
