The contemporary gospel music industry is growing and changing in many different ways. One of the fascinating things about this generation of gospel artists is their diversity and eagerness to grow the genre. Urban contemporary gospel artist Jimmy Mor is no different, and he hopes to contribute to the emerging new talent in Christian/gospel music.
STAFF: What do you find most exciting about the Christian/gospel music industry today?
Jimmy: The eagerness to find real people in the gospel music space regardless of how they sound. There’s less of a focus on a specific sound now and more of a focus on the words that people say. That’s a good thing because it opens up the door for more people to be creative and be themselves without having to fit the traditional mold of gospel music.
STAFF: Where do you see gospel music going in 5 years?
Jimmy: I see more people being embraced that bear their scars in a way that’s meant to heal others. I think people like Jonathan McReynolds and Koryn Hawthorne are well-known for that very reason. They’re comfortable being themselves, and they don’t find it necessary to sound too much like traditional gospel music for them to get the message across. Right now the world is hurting, so we need the message of the gospel more than ever. I think it’s a good idea to try and reach people with any style that you like but with the message being the gospel.
STAFF: Do you think that this could change the way that people view the gospel music industry?
Jimmy: In some ways, yes. More people will find the music if it speaks to things that they can connect with. For Christian artists, it’s an opportunity to let God use you by using your gift in a vulnerable way. It feels like a responsibility in some ways. If He gave us the gift, we can turn around and serve Him with it, you know?
STAFF: How do you think artists will become more comfortable being vulnerable in their music?
Jimmy: Well, specifically in Christian music, we have the opportunity to minister with our authenticity. I’ve learned that artists can be much more helpful by being transparent with their mistakes. Transparency is a good place to start a relationship. If your friend knows that you’ve made the same mistakes they’ve made, it’s easier for them to see how much God can change them because they’ve seen Him change you.
